Few things ruin a vape faster than a sudden harsh, burnt taste — that dry, acrid "dry hit" that makes you cough and pull a face. The good news is that it almost always comes down to one thing: the coil isn't getting enough e-liquid. This guide walks through every cause of a burnt vape and exactly how to fix and prevent it.
Your coil has a wick that soaks up e-liquid, and the coil heats that liquid into vapour. When the wick runs dry — or hasn't soaked up enough liquid — the coil burns the wick itself instead of the e-liquid, and that is the burnt taste you are getting (a "dry hit"). Almost every burnt-taste problem traces back to this: coil hot, wick dry.
In short: a burnt taste means the coil isn't getting enough e-liquid. Fix the liquid supply and you fix the taste.
The most common culprit with a fresh pod or coil is not "priming" it. When you fit a new one, the wick is bone dry — fire it straight away and you scorch it instantly, and that burnt taste can stick around for the life of the coil. Always let a new pod or coil stand for 3–5 minutes after filling so the wick fully saturates before your first puff.
Taking puff after puff without a break doesn't give the wick time to re-soak between hits. The coil dries out faster than the liquid can replace it, and you get a burnt edge. If you notice it while chain vaping, pause for 15–30 seconds between puffs to let the wick catch up.
If the liquid level drops below the wick ports (the little holes on the coil), the wick can't draw any more liquid and starts to burn. Keep your pod or tank above about a quarter full, and top up before it runs dry rather than squeezing out the last few puffs.
Running an adjustable device at too high a wattage burns e-liquid faster than the wick can supply it. If your device lets you adjust power, drop the wattage — start low and increase gradually until the flavour is full but not harsh. Every coil has a recommended range printed on it; stay within it.
Coils don't last forever. Over days or weeks the wick gets gunked up with residue (especially from sweet, dark or high-VG e-liquids), and eventually no amount of priming will fix it — the flavour turns muted then burnt. This is normal wear. When a burnt taste appears on an older coil or pod, it is simply time for a fresh one.
Prime every new coil, keep your liquid topped up, don't chain vape, stay within the coil's wattage range, and change coils before they're completely spent. Do that and burnt hits become rare. Typically one to two weeks with regular use, though sweet and dark e-liquids wear coils faster. When flavour fades or turns burnt on an older coil, it's time to replace it.
