Understanding e-liquid: nic salts vs shortfills

Every e-liquid is a blend of VG (vegetable glycerin), PG (propylene glycol), flavouring and, usually, nicotine, but they split into two camps. Nic salts are smooth, higher-nicotine 50/50 blends made for pod kits and MTL vaping. Shortfills are larger, higher-VG bottles (often 100ml) that arrive as 0mg with room to add a nic shot, designed for sub-ohm devices and bigger clouds. Knowing which camp you need is the key decision: it's dictated by your device, not just your taste.

What is a shortfill and how do you use one?

A shortfill is a bottle of nicotine-free e-liquid that's deliberately under-filled, for example, 100ml of liquid in a 120ml bottle, to leave space for nicotine. You add a "nic shot" (a 10ml 18mg unfreebase or nic salt booster), shake, and it brings the whole bottle to a low strength like 3mg. This lets you buy larger quantities cost-effectively and control your own nicotine level. If you're winding down or vape 0mg, you simply skip the nic shot and vape the shortfill as it comes.

VG/PG ratio: matching liquid to device

The VG/PG ratio decides how an e-liquid performs. A 50/50 blend is thin enough to wick in small pod coils and gives a satisfying throat hit, ideal for pod kits and MTL. Higher-VG blends like 70/30 are thicker, produce bigger clouds and suit sub-ohm tanks and mods.
